2011 CHAPTER INITIATIVES
INITIATIVE I - EMERGING YOUNG LEADERS
Goal: To provide leadership development, civic engagement, enhanced academic preparation and character building for middle school girls in preparation for becoming better leaders in the twenty-first century and beyond.
Chapter Approach
1. Sponsor Emerging Young Leaders - Select the FASHIONETTA Contestants one year in advance, and meet bi-monthly, targeting girls in grades 6-8
INITIATIVE II - HEALTH
Goal: To encourage personal fitness and healthy life styles through early diagnosis, treatment, awareness and parental education and advocacy.
Chapter Approach
Asthma Prevention and Management
- Assist Early Education and Care (Headstart) through volunteer service with screenings and health forums. Provide education for parents emphasizing early detection and management of asthma.
Health Education and Treatment
- To collaborate with the Panama City News Herald Annual Health Expo along with Bay Medical Center and Gulf Coast Hospital.
- To provide monetary contributions to organizations which diagnose, treat and research cures (i.e. American Cancer Association, American Heart Association, HIV/AIDS, Sickle Cell and American Diabetes Association.
- Personal fitness and healthy lifestyle (EYL)
- Assist in purchasing inhalers for pre-school students to manage asthma, based on need and chapter budget.
Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability
- Throuugh the Emerging Young Leaders “go green living” activities will be utilized to encourage conservation.
INITIATIVE III - GLOBAL POVERTY
Goal: To end hunger, preserve the environment and empower women.
Chapter Approach
- To contribute to the Marketplace for women in Liberia, Africa.
- My Sister’s Closet: Sorors will donate new and/or slightly used professional clothing and accessories to a local organization for women in transition to the workforce while hosting various work-shops for the purpose of aiding them with dressing for success and their career search.
- Donate food to local food bank
- Family Fun Day: The chapter will sponsor in partnership with the staff of Martin Luther King, Jr. Center to host an Annual Family Fun Day for the youth and adults of the community.
- HEIFER International Partnership: The chapter will make a donation to Kenya to purchase live stock.
- United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization: The chapter will make a contribution to the UNESCO project.
INITIATIVE IV - ECONOMIC SECURITY
Goal: The chapter will support the empowerment of female owned businesses, to build a strong foundation with women in business.
Chapter Approach
- Black Dollar Day: Sorors will support and encourage others to support female black owned businesses.
INITIATIVE V - SOCIAL JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Goal: To collaborate with organizations that provide services to women and children who are in homeless or domestic violent shelters.
Chapter Approach
- Monetary, personal toiletry and slightly used clothing contributions to
- Rescue Mission
- Domestic Violent Shelter
INITIATIVE VI - INTERNAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR EXTERNAL SERVICE
Goal: To provide a foundation for leadership training at the local level to allow members to reach their fullest potential.
Chapter Approach
- Chapter Annual Leadership Seminar
- Chapter mini leadership workshops bi-monthly
- Encourage attendance to Cluster Meetings, Regional Conferences, International Leadership Seminars and Boule.
INITIATIVE VII - Local Chapter
Goal: To continue to provide services to the local community that has proven to be a need and have achieved much success.
Chapter Approach
- Leadership Breakfast: The chapter will host various workshops to include, but not limited to finance, careers, life skills and college entry to be held in conjunction with the student leadership breakfast for 11th and 12th graders
- Adopt – A – School: In partnership with Patterson elementary School, the chapter will provide financial, academic, social and educational activities for students in grades Pre Kindergarten-fifth.
- MLK Festival: The chapter will participate in the MLK Festival by providing a bouncing machine for the youth.
- Senior Recognition: The chapter will collaborate with other Black Greek Letter organizations to provide a recognition ceremony and reception for graduating high school seniors . The group will also provide workshops and seminars for high school juniors and seniors.
- Scholarships: The chapter will award scholarships to deserving students in the local area. The scholarships awarded are:
- Lois B. Miller HBCU (Historically Black College and Universities). The chapter will award a graduating high school senior a scholarship to a HBCU of their choice.
- GCCC Wendy Cruise - The chapter will award two graduating high school seniors a scholarship to attend Gulf Coast Community College.
- Hattie Burch Community Service - The chapter will award a high school senior a scholarship for completing 200 hours or more of community service.
- Mae Jemison - The chapter will provide scholarships for students whose primary study is in math, applied science, or economics.
- Norma Jean Jones Baker Book Scholarship: The chapter will provide scholarships for students based on financial needs to purchase books at GCCC.
